History
Since 1964
Founded in 1964, Sheffield University Rowing Club (SURC) has grown into one of the University's largest and most successful sports clubs. Run entirely by students, the club has spent over six decades developing rowers and coxswains of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced athletes competing at national events.
Our Colours
SURC's racing colours reflect the University of Sheffield's traditional sporting colours of black and gold, represented by the club through black and yellow.
Our racing all-in-one has retained its original black and yellow design, continuing a long-standing part of the club's identity at competitions.
Our newer training all-in-one brings together the wider SURC colour palette of black, yellow, white and light blue, incorporating the colours seen across the club's kit and traditions.
The Blazer
One of the club's most distinctive traditions is the Sheffield University Rowing Club blazer. With its bold light blue, white and gold stripes, the blazer has become a recognisable part of SURC's identity and is proudly worn by members at regattas and club occasions. Its colours echo the historic identity of the University of Sheffield. The University's coat of arms dates back to 1905 and features an azure blue shield alongside gold, white and silver details. At its centre sits an open book bearing the words Disce Doce — "Learn and Teach" — surrounded by symbols representing Sheffield and Yorkshire, including the Sheffield arrows and the White Rose of York. Today, the blazer remains a distinctive symbol of SURC, representing the club and its connection to the University of Sheffield.
The Logo
The SURC logo draws inspiration from the University of Sheffield's historic coat of arms, adapting its design to represent the Rowing Club. One of the most recognisable changes is the replacement of the Sheffield arrows with rowing blades, transforming an element of the University's crest into one that reflects the identity and heritage of SURC. The logo retains the strong visual connection to the University while creating an emblem that is distinctly our own.
