In early December our senior squads travelled to Newark for their first race of the season. Despite the cold and foggy conditions, it was a very successful day for SURC with 3 out 5 crews coming home with pots! Late in November our novices completed their first ever race in Liverpool! They rowed incredible well and have come very far from their first few days on the water. Results are as follows: Novice Men (A): 3rd place Novice Men (B): 5th place Novice Women: 3rd place Composite: time A massive well done to both squads!

In November we took the novices to Chester for a mini training camp on the Dee, kindly hosted by Royal Chester Rowing Club. The squads made incredible progress on and off the water, and had the opportunity to bond. We look forward to what is to come!

This year saw the return of the SURC Alumni BBQ at Henley. Despite a few raindrops it was wonderful to see a crowd of blue SURC blazers on the fields of Henley Cricket Club. There was a range of alumni from across the years as well as members of next year’s committee. We hope to keep this as an annual event so keep an eye out for details of next year’s BBQ.

On 23rd June 2023, the senior men’s squad sent an 8+ to Henley to compete in qualifying races for the Temple Challenge Cup. The crew were competing in a packed field of 60 crews for one of 13 spaces. The boys pulled out an extremely strong row in very gusty conditions and gave it their all. Unfortunately, they missed out on qualifying by 2 spots, being 0.39 seconds off the fastest non-qualifiers. This year, the senior women’s squad sent two quads to Henley to compete in the Chairman’s Trophy. Our second quad, despite a strong time trial, unfortunately missed out on qualifying. For Henley Royal Regatta this year, we sent a coxed four to compete in the Prince Albert Challenge Cup. The qualifying races were held at Dorney Lake on the Saturday before the start of the regatta. The boys stayed in Sheffield over the summer to continue training. Marlow International Regatta, held at Eton Dorney Lake, took place on Saturday 19th June. The Senior Men's 1st VIII went down and raced in the Tier 2 8s category, a combined category of not just university 8s this year, but school and club boats too. Since our 12 Days of Charity event had to be postponed due to the pandemic, we have started a new challenge ’12 Days of Summer’ as an alternative so that we can continue to raise money for Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity. Sport Awards was held last weekend, with an outdoor ceremony. Only 6 club members were allowed to attend due to the ongoing restrictions. A few members of SURC helped Loxley and Wisewood Litterpickers yesterday around Damflask. They managed to collect over 30 bags of rubbish from the northern shore! The rubbish has been reported for collection. We are excited for the next one and hope to get even more members helping out!
