ROW WITH SURC

Learn to Row

You don't need any previous rowing experience to get involved with SURC. We'll help you get started and introduce you to the sport.

There are several ways to give rowing a try throughout the year, whether you want to see what it's like before committing or jump straight into our novice programme.

RowFit

RowFit is open to everyone, you don't need to be a member of SURC or have any previous rowing experience to join.

Led by our RowFit Captain, the sessions combine fitness with learning how to use the rowing machine (erg) properly, including the correct technique and form. They're a great way to get active, meet people and get a first taste of rowing in a friendly and relaxed environment.

Sessions are completely free and take place at Goodwin Sports Centre. Keep an eye on our Instagram and socials, where we announce upcoming sessions and everything you need to know to get involved.

Give it a go

Throughout Freshers' Week and the first few weeks of the semester, we run Give It a Go sessions for anyone interested in trying rowing.

It's your chance to get in a boat and experience rowing on the water, or try out an erg session and learn some of the basics before deciding if you want to join.

No previous experience is needed — just come along and give it a go!

Dates, times and sign-up forms are shared on our Instagram and other social media, and you can also find out more by visiting us at the Freshers' Fair.

Novices Squad

If you've decided rowing is for you and want to join SURC, the next step is our novice trials.

Trials are held at the beginning of the first semester, shortly after Freshers' Week, and are led by our Novice Captains. They usually involve a fitness test and help us select the crews that will make up our Men's and Women's Novice Squads for the year.

You don't need any previous rowing experience to trial — our novice squads are specifically for people who are new to the sport. Once selected, you'll learn to row, train with your squad and work towards racing as part of a crew throughout the year.

All information about trials, including dates, times and how to sign up, will be shared on our Instagram and social media.

Want to Cox?

Want to get involved in rowing without being the one pulling the oars? You can join SURC as a coxswain, and you don't need any previous experience.

You'll learn to cox with the club, getting out on the water with our senior crews and learning from experienced rowers and coxes. From steering the boat and giving commands to understanding how a crew works together, you'll pick things up as you go.

It's a great way to get involved in the sport, be part of a crew and experience training and racing from a completely different seat in the boat.
