As a club SURC prides itself on how much we do to give back to the local community. We do a vast amount of fundraising for local charities, most notably Sheffield Children’s Hospital Charity to whom we dedicate the fundraising from our annual 12 Days of Christmas charity event. This event consists of at least one volunteering event or one fundraiser every day for 12 Days: fundraisers vary from 12 hour row-a-thons at Sheffield Station, to sponsored waxing of our Senior and Novice Men and 100km cycle rides in the Peaks.

We have built a good relationship with many local schools through our voluntary PE sessions to let the children have a go on a rowing machine and experience some of our training. In 2018 we expanded this by adapting our session for children with disabilities and specific special needs allowing us to reach out for even more local schools and their integrated resource to provide sport for all. We also travel to local residential homes to spend time with the elderly and Holly Hagg Alpaca Farm providing manual labour and therefore allowing them to continue their own charity work in providing free alpaca walks for patients of The Children’s Hospital.

Our work has been recognised by the University and Sport Sheffield over the last few years, we were awarded the Fundraising Initiative Award in 2018, the Volunteering Initiative in 2017 and our charity and volunteering work factored into the club being awarded Club of the Year in 2015.
